Brion Benninger
Professor Brion Benninger MD MBChB MSc-Sports Medicine
Through his entire clinical and research career, he has supported and mentored medical students and residents to become excited about research with his medical research projects, helping them become translational researchers while collaborating with colleagues from Western University of Health Sciences-Oregon Osteopathic campus, nationally and internationally renowned institutions. His students have received basic science, educational, clinical, and medical technology research awards with his projects at all levels. He is the world’s most prolific medical student research mentor taking an average of 15-20 Osteopathic students per year (over 300 projects associated with over 400 students). He has medical patents with ultrasound and an airway device while developing multiple medical devices. Besides mentoring medical students, he provides experiential learning projects mentoring students from University of Oregon, Oregon State University, and high school students from Lebanon & Portland Oregon on cutting edge medical technology research. He is privileged to edit the world’s most sold human atlas – Netter’s Atlas of Human Anatomy working with Dr. Carlos Machado (most renowned medical illustrator globally) which stimulates him to provide research opportunities for healthcare students to advance the macro, micro, static and dynamic anatomy with experiential technology, improving global health. He serves to teach medicine, improve medical knowledge using clinical anatomy, and promote medical innovation to provide quality and safe healthcare as defined by individuals, communities, and cultures.
Dr. Benninger incorporates dynamic and ratio anatomy in his teaching improving imaging interpretation, invasive procedures, surgery, and lifelike simulation technology. He is an Ultrasound Director, Clinical Anatomist, Medical Technology Beta Tester, Reverse Translational Researcher, and Innovative Medical Educator trained and mentored in England at universities/hospitals in London (Guys Hospital), Cambridge (Addenbrookes Hospital), Nottingham (Queens Medical Center), and Leicester (Leicester Royal Infirmary). He is the Executive Director of the Medical Anatomy Center and faculty to General surgery, Orthopedic Surgery and Radiology programs. Dr. Benninger speaks and teaches internationally as a progressive medical innovator and educator. Using an ultrasound finger probe and google glass he invented the triple feedback physical examination technique.
He collaborates with entrepreneurial and established companies developing multi-varied technologies and techniques including ultrasound probes, SECTRA 3D-CT Visualization Table, Touch of Life technologies (Toltech)-OPUS Mini robotic ultrasound simulator with haptic feedback, Toltech AR-VR-XR, Body Worlds plastination, FIO-Flexible Intubation Optics, Sharp Medical - REACTOR (chest drain) & Turbo Oxygen cap (intubation), GAX-specimens, novel contrasts from Scarlet Imaging advancing imaging and clinical skills. He developed the anatomy deconstruction/reconstruction teaching and learning theory. He has taught and worked for over 30 years in the medical field in several countries, which has provided him invaluable exposure, experience, and insight to understand and improve medical education, patient, community & global healthcare.
